How much time did you spend looking for a perfect beauty and skincare products that suit your skin type, have an anti-aging effect or smell nice? If you are like most of the women, the answer is a lot.
How much time did you actually spend reading and checking the ingredients? For many, beauty ingredient labels found on the back of the packaging are often confusing and unclear, but what we don't realise is that everything you actually put on the skin absorbs into your bloodstream which gives your skincare products, even a bigger responsibility.
Some of the toxic ingredients and chemicals you should definitely ditch are parabens, sodium lauryl sulphate, alcohol, formaldehyde, phthalates, cosmetic colours, and fragrance. Parabens are used to preserve a shelf-life of beauty products, while sodium laurel sulphate or SLS can be found in shampoo, body wash, and toothpaste but causes skin irritation and even acne. Both formaldehyde and phthalates are suspected to be carcinogens.
Although it's not the worst one, fragrance has become one of the most used ingredients in skincare, because, you guessed it, we all like nice, smelly things! Unfortunately, it's doesn’t do any good for your skin and body, so try to swap it for a natural alternative. The same applies to colours in skincare, which is used for a simple reason - to make it more appealing.
On the other hand, organic ingredients you should include in your daily skincare routine are natural oils such as tea tree, olive and argan oil, aloe vera, honey, rose, sea salt, clays, grapes, and chamomile. These non-toxic ingredients rarely have drastic side effects, they are safe and non-toxic. Although we can all agree green and natural makes a better choice for your skincare than synthetic, it doesn't necessarily mean it's ethically sourced or it can't have a negative effect. It's really important to find the right balance and to think through before buying the right products for you.
